FAQ - Storage and Handling

Peptides are biologically active substances. Therefore certain precautions have to be taken into consideration during handling and storage.

Storage and Handling of Peptides

For reconstitution and storage purposes we recommend the following guidelines:

Handling of Lyophilized Peptides

Peptides should be stored at -18°C for maximum stability. Because peptides are often hygroscopic, the peptide samples should be warmed to room temperature in a desiccator prior to opening and weighing. The absorption of moisture can decrease the stability and reduce the overall peptide content. Weight out the peptides quickly and reseal the vial tightly to prevent water uptake.

Solubilization and Storage

Peptides should be dissolved in an appropriate buffer: acidic peptides in a basic buffer and basic peptides in an acidic buffer. If necessary, sonicate briefly. For hydrophobic peptides it is recommended to dissolve in a small volume of DMSO or iso-propanol (< 5-10 % of final volume) and to dilute with the appropriate buffer. Peptides containing Trp, Met or Cys require special care to avoid oxidation. Oxygen-free water or reducing agents may be used. For storage, peptide solutions should be aliquoted and kept frozen at -18°C. Most peptides containing Trp, Met, Cys, Asn or Gln have a limited shelf life. Long-term storage is not recommended (peptides solutions).

Handling of Peptides in Solution

Peptide solutions are considerably less stable than lyophilized powders and bacterial degradation can be a common problem. To prevent this from happening, peptides should be dissolved in sterile purified solvents. Alternatively, the peptide solution can be sterile filtered using a 0.22 µm filter. Please avoid frequent freezing and thawing cycles. Solutions in stock should be aliquoted and stored below -18°C.

Because most peptides are also stable as a lyophilisate at room temperature, they do not require refrigeration for short periods of time during transportation. However, the extended exposure to warm temperatures should be avoided. After receipt, we recommended the peptide long-term storage in temperatures below -18°C. Most peptides, when stored this way, will remain stable for years. If a peptide requires special transportation conditions, the client will be informed.
